Introduction
This Government Accredited Course has been specially designed after extensive consultation with industry experts to ensure graduates have the required skills and knowledge to work with laser and IPL equipment upon graduating and be able to perform a range of Dermal Therapy and Laser hair reduction treatments.
This qualification reflects the role of individuals employed as skin or beauty therapists who design and provide specialised skin treatments for clients with various skin treatment needs.
They are skilled individuals who synthesise specialised knowledge and experience to consult, design and manage sequential treatment programs. They possess highly developed communication skills and specialised technical skills. Practitioners operate within a defined scope of practice and use initiative and judgement to refuse or refer treatments as required.

The skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. The use of laser and Intense Pulsed Light is subject to legislation, regulation and licensing in some Australian States and Territories. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.
Laser hair reduction and Dermal Therapy treatments are in high demand in today’s modern salon and this course will ensure that the therapist is able to perform the treatments safely for both the client and themselves.
Attendance Requirements
Semester 1.
20 day block for face to face theory and practical application. (this is one day a week for 20 weeks, Weekdays and Saturdays are available)
or one evening a week online with your trainer for 20 weeks. (Thursday evening)
Self-paced study continuing and completing theory component online and with your Trainer’s assistance
Semester 2 – Clinical placement
150 practical hours in our Dermal clinic under the guidance of our fully qualified Laser and Dermal Therapy Trainers and Assessors.
For those already working in the industry 100 of these hours can be completed externally under suitably qualified supervisors
We train on the best Candela, Derma Pen Australia and Adena equipment.
Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who have achieved all of the following units of competency:
- SHBBFAS005 Provide facial treatments and skincare recommendations OR SHBBFAS002 Provide facial treatments and skincare recommendations
- SHBBFAS006 Provide specialised facial treatments OR SHBBFAS003 Provide specialised facial treatments
- SHBBINF002 Maintain infection control standards OR HLTINF005 Maintain infection prevention for skin penetration treatments
- SHBBSSC001 Incorporate knowledge of skin structure and functions into beauty therapy
- SHBBSSC002 Incorporate knowledge of body structures and functions into beauty therapy
Or;
who are able to demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge to each of the above units of competency.
Note: If you do not have these pre-requisites but are studying a Diploma of Beauty Therapy, you may enrol in AABT5022 Advanced Laser, IPL and Dermal Therapies
15 units must be completed:
- 10 core units
- 5 elective units
The selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

Prerequisites
Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who:
- Have completed or are enrolled in the SHB50121 Diploma of Beauty Therapy
- Have completed SHBBINF002 Maintain infection control standards
OR
- Have relevant experience in the application of knowledge in human biology, anatomy and physiology (e.g Bachelor of Dermal Sciences)
- It is highly recommended to first complete the preparatory course AABT5022 Advanced Laser IPL & Dermal Therapies to ensure you have the skills and knowledge to succeed in this level 6 course
Course Details
- This unit satisfies the requirements for a Laser Officer Safety Certificate, Queensland approval No ED278.
- This unit satisfies the requirements for those wishing to obtain a licence for Laser hair removal in Western Australia and is approved by the Western Australia Radiological Council.
- This unit satisfies the Tasmanian Department of Health Radiation Unit laser safety requirements and recipients may apply for a licence to use a laser under supervision in Tasmania. This laser safety course is on their Approved course register.

- Apply cosmetic chemistry knowledge to select most appropriate products for client’s dermal therapy requirements
- Recommend and explain use of specialised Dermal Therapy formulations for specific skin treatments
- Provide client with post treatment advice and pre-treatment advice
